3 Blacque Chix

Herotique – AAHH…

Fremont Centre Theatre

Back in 1973 the Federal Communications Commission decided there were seven words that could never, ever be said on the airwaves.   George Carlin has a famous monologue that addresses that very issue, and now it’s back again.

Guess what!  The 3 Blacque Chix, in “Herotique – AAHH…” now playing at the Fremont Centre Theatre, manage to say almost every one of the forbidden words, not once – not twice – but almost continuously throughout their show.  They even use words that aren't on the list, and after the run of the show, don't be surprised if the FCC subpoenas those words to add to the infamous seven.

This deliciously ribald show is replete with sexual fantasies, lurid descriptions and downright crude dialog, in what can only be described as a celebration of erotica.  While it’s billed as a Sexistential Comedy, it goes way beyond that.  Starting with the stated premise that women over forty no longer enjoy sex, Mariann Aalda, Lola Love and Iona Morris, all lovely and sexy women over forty, set out to smash the stereotype, and what they do with the premise will make any hormone riddled teen-ager blush.

Accompanied by a drummer and bass player, they each take a turn at talking about their love lives, their men, what they want out of love, how they like their sex and how they go about getting it.

Sans nudity or fleshy displays, their dialogs are a mix of almost poetic verse, morphing into the metaphoric while frequently plunging into the profane. Sometimes they sing, sometimes they dance, sometimes they do both, and as their descriptions and stories evolve, its pretty evident that these ladies are having the time of their life as they talk about things and describe sexual activities that most people either speak of in whispers, or have never dared to even imagine.  The vicarious trip they give the audience is definitely outside of almost everybody’s boundaries, and half the fun of this show is watching how the people react to what these lovelies say and do.  Some men might consider this an essential primer in how to be successful in the pursuit of the older woman, while many women may discover how to rekindle that spark that most complain having lost.  One thing for sure; everybody will have a sharp reaction to the presentation and the concept behind the show, either loving it or hating it.

Based on audience reaction on opening night, the former should be the operative agenda.  If ever a tornado hit the quiet, conservative hamlet of South Pasadena it’s definitely called the 3 Blacque Chix, who prove that average theatre is passé and the audience is ready to boldly go where no one has gone before.  You can thank Lissa and James Reynolds for that.  The show continues through February 26, 2006 .  Reservations at: (866) 811-4111. *
